WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

Auckland Council Long-Term Plan submissions are now closed. Thank you to the 873 people who completed a submission! It was an amazing number in just 10 days.

It's not over yet though. To continue the pressure we are now asking for people to sign our petition. This will be presented at the open council meeting 16 May.

We need your support for 2 things:

Keep the stadium precinct as it is

Change the operational management

Tell Council you want to Save our Stadium

We need to continue to send a strong message to Council to SAVE OUR STADIUM. Keep it as it is and put in new management to ensure it is fit for purpose and here for future generations to enjoy.

WHY WE ARE ASKING FOR YOUR HELP

In the LTP, Auckland Council is considering the following options that relate to the future investment needs and management of North Harbour Stadium precinct:

  1. Maintain the status quo and invest in essential renewals of $33 million over 10 years.

  2. Redevelop (which could include deconstruction of the existing stadium) the precinct to better deliver for the needs of the North Shore community and the greater Auckland region, funded through the reallocation of the $33 million renewal funding for the precinct, the sale of some precinct land while retaining the existing community playing fields, and any other external funding available.

  3. Change the operational management of North Harbour Stadium to ensure greater use by the community.

Council have been flip-flopping on their plans for North Harbour Stadium for some time now. First, they proposed selling the stadium and using the money to fund other stadia around Auckland. Then they promised they wouldn't demolish. Now, they have gone out to consultation on a broad, wordy proposal that, under option 2, would still allow them to demolish the Stadium and sell land.

IF WE LOSE THE STADIUM NOW, WE WILL LOSE IT FOREVER

We need a new Trust to manage the stadium and put a programme of work together to ensure it's fit for purpose for professional sports and entertainment.

Leaving it to Council to demolish (with an estimated cost of $20M to do so) and/or sell land within the precinct is not the answer.

WHAT WE ARE FIGHTING FOR

The Stadium and precinct were built in 1997 on the blood, sweat and tears of local residents. They formed a trust, sold season passes, seats and even trees to raise funds to build an amazing facility right in our backyard. Before management of the precinct was taken over in 2014 by Council, it was a profitable, popular facility for sports games, shows, events and more.

The North Harbour Stadium is the newest stadium in Auckland – only 27 years old (with a replacement cost of about $450 million). Under Council management it has been purposely left to deteriorate.

Games and events are booked elsewhere, and a massive hole has been left in the western embankment where they removed seating. Some teams have even been told that, while they want to play at North Harbour, they HAVE to play elsewhere.

The stadium used to be a profitable, popular, much-loved facility for international and local sporting games, concerts, events and more. And it can be again!

DON'T LET COUNCIL TAKE OUR STADIUM AWAY
